Oral History and Memory Keeping

Brick City Voices Project

Newark residents record the memories that shape the city, in their own voices.

Newark’s history, in Newark’s own voices.

Brick City Voices Project was created to preserve and share the rich history of our community through the personal stories of its residents. By capturing these narratives, we aim to build a deeper understanding of Newark’s diverse culture, its history, and the people who shaped it. Young people from Newark high schools sit down with neighbors, elders, and community members to record their stories about life, housing, and neighborhood history. The recordings become a living archive of the city, made by the people who live in it.

Why local storytelling matters:
Newark’s history is too often told by people from outside it. These interviews put the people who lived it in charge of how it’s remembered, and make sure those stories are passed along instead of lost.
