The Community Newsroom

For years, the idea behind this work has been simple: journalists and residents belong in the same room. The Community Newsroom is where that happens.

Through Listening Sessions, we bring residents, local organizations, and journalists together around a single issue at a time, things like housing, education, gun violence, wellness, and environmental justice, to talk honestly about what’s happening, what people need, and where the gaps are. Residents leave having been heard. Organizations and journalists leave with a clearer picture of what Newark is actually asking for.

How it works

Each Listening Session focuses on one topic. There are no panels in this event format. We will facilitate a conversation that is grounded by a story from one of our youth reporters and led by the people living it.

We’re hosting two sessions this year:

  • An in-person Listening Session, late October/early November
  • A virtual Listening Session over Zoom, early December

Local nonprofits, organizers, and community organizations join to share resources and information directly with residents. Partner journalists and media outlets join to listen first and report second.
